In the 1950s the industry set out to boost sugar consumption, and at the same time to increase public knowledge about sugar and publicise its benefits.
After five years of campaigning, there was a modest rise in consumption :
- in 1955-1956, total consumption was 1,181,017 tonnes,
- in 1959-1960 it rose to 1,362,455 tonnes.
Overall, there was an increase of 8% in consumption of table sugar and a 27,2% increase in industrial use.
